As alphabets and words are learnt before embarking to learn any language, a basic knowledge about the the anatomical aspects of human body will form a firm foundation to the understanding of the anatomical details of the body. In General Anatomy the basic aspects of construction and maintenance of human body is described. The anatomical aspects of cell, basic tissues, formation of different systems of the body and their preliminary understanding is attained by studying the General anatomy. This basic knowledge is essential for understanding the detailed study of Human Anatomy.

Superior extremity also commonly called upper extremity is homologous to the forelimbs of a quadruped. Due to the erect posture of the human body, the function of the upper extremity is to handle the tools to perform more skillful activities. To facilitate handling of tools the superior extremity is provided with the shoulder joint, elbow joint, Radioulnar joints and the wrist joints with a wide range of movements, the pronation and supination of the forearm, and the prehensile thumb. At the end of this course, the course takers will be able to understand the anatomy of joints of upper extremity and the actions of various muscles acting on these joints. The anatomy of nerves derived from the brachial plexus and also understand the anatomy of the blood vessels of the upper limb.
